Hooligans denied Uefa tickets

25 June 2007

Zurich - Europe's governing football body Uefa has barred 39 known football hooligans from purchasing tickets for 2008's Euro finals, Swiss media reported on Sunday.

The Sonntagszeitung said that the 39 people had tried to obtain tickets in the first ticketing phase, but had been thrown out of the process after their names had appeared on a European-wide black-list of football hooligans who were prohibited from entering stadiums in their own countries.

20 of the identified hooligans were from Switzerland, 16 from Germany and three from the Netherlands.

The head of Euro security Martin Jaeggi said they could not prevent the hooligans from getting tickets from other sources, but he was attempting to work with European countries in ensuring that known hooligans are prevented from leaving their countries during the June 7 - 29 tournament that is being co-hosted by Switzerland and Austria.
